THE IMPORTANCE OF POSTURE——- PART 1

August 28th, 2008 Posted in Getting started

Good posture is important to any surfer wanting to improve performance, reduce recovery time and stay injury free. This is because ideal posture is the position in which the musculoskeletal system functions optimally. The poorer your posture, the more energy it takes to move the body. Therefore, the better your postural alignment, the better your functional performance.

Ideal posture is that position in which the muscular-skeletal system functions most efficiently. Good posture keeps muscles in balance and your body well aligned. An athlete with poor posture is more likely to have greater stress in the stabilizer muscles and joints because movements begin and end in poor posture when alignment is off. The increased stress on joints and stabilizer musculature increases the chance of injury. On the other hand, an athlete with good posture has better alignment, which translates into better balance, agility and overall sports performance. This athlete will also recover quicker from exercise. Additionally, poor posture does not adequately support internal organs, circulation is hampered and an environment more favourable for disease and dysfunction is created.

Muscles also  act as pumps to move fluids through the body. When good posture deteriorates, many of your muscles can’t effectively pump fluids. Poor posture will always indicate the need for a stretching program to lengthen short muscles and an exercise program to tighten weak/loose muscles.

There are many causes of poor posture. Some of these include poor postural habit, pain, muscle imbalances, respiratory conditions, general weakness, excess weight, loss of proprioception or muscle spasm.
